My Plate

(Write a poem about something you had to unlearn)

They taught me you had no feelings

And that you were only here for us

I accepted all the killings

It wasn’t a choice, it was a must

Now I know you’re intelligent and kind

I’ve been allowed to hold and know you

I’ve seen the soul in your eyes

And I feel what I was taught is untrue

I don’t have the answers right now

And I don’t judge what others need to satiate

But I won’t be having the pig or cow

These animals are not meant for my plate
